It's a natural transition from a wide full tail template. Wings allow another added dimension to this shape, for some that would like to ride the MB in steeper and faster surf.
Around here for some the MB is the DD and when the waves are steeper and faster the wings help with extra hold, bite and release.
The next transition from this shape would be a MB-Twin, it would be an extremely fun ride! Any takers? Been tweaking around in my mind for awhile...

Damo, other than the wings it has slightly more vee behind the fins. (very slight)
